It's the reason for the freezing rain season

It's that time again. Time to consider those freezing rain events. If you live and fly along the Mid-Atlantic area, you are very much aware that the region from Charlotteville, Virginia down to Charlotte, North Carolina is the freezing rain capital of the U.S. Now is a good time to review this dangerous weather event.

ree

First, one way that freezing rain (FZRA) occurs is in a deep, saturated atmosphere from nimbostratus clouds where tops are near 30,000 feet. This cold atmosphere typically will produce snow that falls into a melting layer to produce rain and subsequently falls into a shallow subfreezing layer to produce freezing rain. Given the size of the drops, FZRA is considered supercooled LARGE drop (SLD). This can easily be see on EZWxBrief's meteogram view. Let's look at the conditions at the Greenbrier Valley Airport (KLWB) in southeast West Virginia.

Below, the meteogram with icing severity and SLD shown clearly depicts a temperature inversion with temperature below freezing near the surface and increasing to several degrees above 0°C at 6,000 feet MSL. Above 8,000 feet the temperature then decreases to below 0°C. So, icing is depicted in the deep saturated layer above 8,000 feet and below about 4,000 feet MSL with no icing depicted in between these two layers. This region is referred to as the warm nose. The region below 4,000 feet is where you would find the FZRA and SLD.

This is also fairly easy to visualize on the Skew-T log (p) diagram below from the High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model.

ree

Lastly, the North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast radar below also describes this area in West Virginia as expecting freezing rain (red region).

ree

Turned out to be a fairly reasonable forecast with nearby Roanoke, Virginia reporting light freezing rain.

ree

One more point. It's always a good practice to use multiple sources as shown in this post to validate the weather guidance you are using. When they all agree and are telling the same general story, it creates a much higher confidence.
